Release date Feb 23rd 2018. PRE ORDERS AVAILABLE HERE :    Triple vinyl / CD / Download.  In the years following the World War Two, Japan developed one of the most insatiable, dynamic and diverse markets for jazz. For a crucial period of little over a decade – from the late 1960s to the early 1980s – Japanese jazz culture progressed at an astonishing rate, producing an extraordinary array of artists, recordings and record labels that created some of the most forward thinking and impressive jazz to be committed to tape. This amazing journey is explored on ‘J Jazz’. This compilation from BBE uncovers some of the most sought after and rare material from this period and pulls together key artists who shaped the post-war modern jazz scene in Japan. ‘J Jazz’ includes obscure and sought after rarities like the bass-driven power jazz of Koichi Matsukaze’s ‘Earth Mother’, the holy grail rarity of Aizawa Tohru Quartet’s ‘Dead Letter’ and the loping majesty of Takeo Moriyama’s ‘North Wind’. seriE. WOC : COALITION - BIRTH

Image
Private press rarity scheduled for a limited 250 vinyl reissue from  seriE:WOC  on July 7th.Very highly recommended.Don't sleep on this one... Coalition’s single self-produced album, recorded for the private Kenya Records in 1978, presents as many questions as it does offer musical surprises. Not much is known about this groups who were a part of the late 70s Philadelphia jazz-soul scene. The music captured for the LP spans a broad range of styles, ranging from an intense fusion work-out (the album opener, ‘Marionette’), a mellow Terry Callier-esque style ballad (‘Thinking of You’), abstract tonal impressionism (‘Song to my Lady’), Afrocentric Strata East spiritual style jazz (‘Kenya’s Horizon’) and tough blowing hard-bop (‘The Downer’). In some senses, there’s something for everyone, and the bands instrumentation of tenor and flute riding over the solid rhythm section puts the listener in safe hands to enjoy a journey to the unexpected. Those safe hand include drummer Dwight Jam

ENZO ZANGAGLIA PRESENTS seriE.WOC : Milt Jackson Sings With The Enrico Intra Group

Image
It's not often I use this blog as platform to promote labels and reissues however here's a guy on a mission who's very worthy of mention the mighty Enzo Zangaglia from Italy. Enzo is about to reissue the tough to find Milt Jackson Sings With The Enrico Intra Group which will be the first in a series of about 10 very rare (and very good!) jazz albums that he's in the process of licensing from the original labels. All of these will be a true labour of love : Enzo's heavyweight vinyls will not be digitally remastered but cleaned up using the analog masters keeping all the merits and “defects” of the original recording and these will be housed in sleeves recreated using original methods and materials (flip back/ paste board/ tip on covers). Find out more about the man, the music and where to buy it here :  http://seriewoc.tumblr.com Now here's Enzo in his own words: Unfortunately many of the musical works of the past, for various reasons, may not be more accessible b

MAJOR SURGERY - THE FIRST CUT

Image
Major Surgery for Next UK from 1977. Tenor Saxophone – Don Weller   ;   Guitar – Jimmy Roche   ; Drums – Tony Marsh   ; Bass Guitar – Bruce Collcutt First post for 2013 and the first time out in blogland for this obscure privately pressed Don Weller led  session recorded at Virtual Earth in London '77. Here's a few lines lifted from discogs by ultimathulerecords: You don't get much quality jazz-rock/fusion from the UK in the mid-late 1970's, as most bands went either too schmaltzy or got too funky, or worse. So this was a surprise. At first I thought maybe Don Weller's sax was a bit too dry, but he cuts it well against the solid rhythm section. Mostly the structure reminds me of German bands of the same era, Morpheus, Munju, Moira, etc. Although there are references to Nucleus and Isotope. A nice one!
