Image
Takeshi Inomata for Columbia Japan from 1970. Takeshi Inomata (Drums & Percussion) Jun Suzuki (Electric Bass) Shigetok Kamiya (Electric Guitar) Ryo Kawasaki (Electric Guitar) Sho Imai (Trombone & Bass Trombone) Shigemichi Dohmoto (Trombone & Bass Trombone) Takao Uematsu (Tenor Sax & Soprano Sax) Fantastic lp of funky jazz from the Columbia issued Groovy Sound Series. No idea who plays on it as the credits are all in Japanese but it's a monster session. Check out "Mustache" and "Tak's Tune" for some severe beats from drummer/leader Takeshi Inomata. All Killer No Filler - Highly Recommended!

HIDEO SHIRAKI - IN FIESTA

Image
Hideo Shiraki for Teichiku Japan from 1961. Rare super tough hard bop session from Japan featuring the killer koto led and drum driven bomb "In Fiesta". Reissued in Japan by Kyoto Jazz Massive for Think in a blink and miss it moment back in 2005 but now out of print. The old Dusty Groove blurb: A brilliant early album from Japanese drummer Hideo Shiraki a jazz session that bristles with the same intensity as key late 50s work by Benny Golson or Gigi Gryce! Although Hideo's leading the group on drums, his work on the kit is remarkably subtle done with the snappingly rhythmic style that marked some of Golson's best modern experiments of a few years before not nearly as bombastic as his stint with Art Blakey, and more in the rhythmically stepping quality of his work with Art Farmer in the Jazztet. Key players on the session include Hidehiko Matsumoto on tenor and flute and Yuzuru Sera on piano both of whom give the album a fluid grace that's really beautiful soulful ...

LLOYD MCNEILL - TREASURES

Image
Lloyd McNeill for Baobab from 1976. Lloyd McNeill-Flute ; Dom Salvador-Piano ; Cecil McBee-Bass ; Portinho , Brian Brake-Drums ; Ray Armando-Percussion. One for the flute freaks on a private press out of NYC. Heavy Brazilian infuences at work on this wonderful spiritual jazz session from the great Lloyd McNeill. Two originals, one standard and a cracking version of Salvador's "Salvation Army" which featured on Dom's '76 Muse debut "Minha Familia"(Available at Ile Oxumare ). Here's some info on Lloyd McNeill from the excellent Hipwax : The first thing to know about Lloyd McNeill is that his are the very best soul-jazz flute LPs, and each is first-rate, a masterpiece of self-direction. The second thing to know is there is much more to him than his recorded legacy. He is one of those incredible, super-sensitive people who excels at every artistic idiom and endeavor; making wonderful music is just part of his flowing creativity. A professor (at Rutgers Uni...

SADAO WATANABE AND CHARLIE MARIANO - IBERIAN WALTZ

Image
Sadao and Charlie for Tact Japan from 1967. Sadao Watanabe (as) , Charlie Mariano (as) , Masabumi Kikuchi (p) , Masanaga Harada (b) , Masahiko Togashi (ds) , Fumio Watanabe (ds) This received a “Japan Jazz Award” on release. Some severe blowing on this double alto led sextet featuring a young band of soon to be Japanese jazz luminaries. The fast and furious "Palisades" was comped on the Sleepwalker Shibuya Jazz Classics. However the 16 minute title cut is the stand out tune an intense modal waltz with a Spanish tinge featuring coruscating solos from Mariano and Watanabe - hard core stuff. Recommended.

JAMES MARENTIC SEXTET - NIMBUS

Image
James Marentic for Discovery from 1982. James Marentic-Sax/Flute; Tom Harrell -Trumpet/Flugelhorn; Slide Hampton-Trombone; Larry Willis-Piano; Anthony Cox-Bass; Victor Lewis-Drums. Storming post hard bop outing for Mr Marentic and his all star band. Check out the banging latin romp "Baile de las Cucharachas " which kicks off the lp in fine style and the Coltrane inspired "Nimbus". "Aphrodesia" has the inspiration of Kenny Dorham stamped all over it and no prizes for guessing who "Mr Silver I Presume" is aimed at If you enjoyed Tom Harrell's "Aurora" post then this should be right up your street, round your corner and down your block!

CARTER JEFFERSON - THE RISE OF ATLANTIS

Image
Carter Jefferson for Timeless from 1978. Terrific post bop album with latin influences -All Killer No Filler! John Hicks (Piano), Terumasa Hino (Trumpet), Woody Shaw (Producer), Clint Houston (Bass), Victor Lewis (Drums),Carter Jefferson (Sax ), Lani Groves (Vocals), Shunzo Ohno (Trumpet), Steve Thornton (Percussion), Harry Whitaker (Piano) Here's the customary underwhelming AMG review : Tenor saxophonist Carter Jefferson made somewhat of a name for himself when trumpeter Woody Shaw chose him as a member of his first working quintet. Shaw is the producer of this album, Jefferson's fine debut (and evidently only) recording as a leader. Taking a cue from Shaw, the saxophonist sticks essentially to a quintet of trumpet and sax backed by all-star rhythm sections. Three of the tracks include hard bop trumpeter Terumasa Hino while the other three feature little-known Japanese trumpeter Shunzo Ono. Most of the tunes are firmly in the school of hard bop, the sort of music that Woody Sh...

JULIO GUTIERREZ - PROGRESSIVE LATIN

Image
Julio Gutierrez for Gema from 1960. The title says it all for this groundbreaking heavyweight descarga session...Highly recommended. Has anyone out there got a copy of Gutierrez's "Havana BC" they want to sell me?If so leave me a message in the comments. Progressive Latin should be considered a classic of Latin jazz if it isn't already. "Cosa Buena" cooks, and "Closing Time" is a slower bossa nova with flute and horns that captures the mood of a good night out at its end. "Yambambe," an Afro rhythm behind mostly piano, sounds more sophisticated than its simple construction. "El Altiplano" is supposed to be an Incan melody with Afro elements. In any case, vocal interjections pave the way for a longer descarga where a variety of intriguing elements (horns, flute piano, even organ) work together in their own weird ways and combinations. The "Route 66" theme arrangement is a coup; the sax and flute are recorded gorgeously,...

SONNY STITT - PRIMITIVO SOUL

Image
Sonny Stitt for Prestige from 1964. Ronnie Mathews, Piano ; Leonard Gaskin, Bass; Herbie Lovelle, Drums; Osvaldo Martinez,Bongos ; Marcelino Valdez, Conga. Inexplicably this has never been reissued which is a shame as it's a great jazz lp with an authentic latin feel."Slave Maidens" and "Barefoot Ball" do it for me every time but the rest of the album is cracking. AMG review:Excellent soul jazz and blues numbers by alto and tenor saxophonist Sonny Stitt, who plays with almost unrelenting energy and drive throughout this session. This was a typical date, but Stitt's earthy playing moved it beyond cliche and convention.

NAOYA MATSUOKA & WESING - FIESTA FIESTA

Image
Naoya Matsuoka and Wesing for Discomate Japan from 1979. "Pao De Acucar" is a 100mph brazilian flavoured fusion banger;"Take 645" keeps the latin feel but slows it down - big in jazz funk circles back in the day. The rest of the lp is pretty much run of the mill Jap jazz funk apart from the nauseating "Fiesta Fiesta" with its cod reggae sound and girlie vocals-truly hideous stuff.

JACK WILSON - EASTERLY WINDS

Image
Jack Wilson for Blue Note from 1967. Jack Wilson-Piano;Lee Morgan-Trumpet;Garnett Brown-Trombone;Jackie McLean-Alto;Bob Cranshaw-Bass;Billy Higgins-Drums This is now oop and seems to have slipped thru the net in blogland. I've ripped the 97 Toshiba EMI cd reissue for this post. Tough set of tunes best known for the rug cutter "On Children" .You just can't fail with a line up like that! AMG Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine Easterly Winds provides an excellent contrast to Jack Wilson's first Blue Note album, Somethin' Personal. Where his label debut was cool and romantic, Easterly Winds is a brassy, funky collection of soul-jazz and hard bop with instant appealing. Wilson keeps the tone fairly diverse, both in his originals and covers. After hitting hard with the funky opening pair "Do It" and "On Children" (both of which illustrate that he was familiar with contemporary soul), he quiets the mood with a nice version of Johnny Mandel's ...

All Killer No Filler.

MANTECA - RITMO Y SABOR

Image
Lazaro Pla aka Manteca for Sound Triangle from 197? Super heavyweight percussion/descarga session from Pla plus Patato Valdes and Nelson "Flaco"Padron(Cachao on Bass???). If you liked Puente in Percussion this will blow you away.Just check out the ridiculous breaks on "Afro Funky" and "Cosas De Manteca" to get a flavour of how good this is. Percussionists who were lucky enough to witness Manteca play the bongos with this group, relate tales of an enormous man who could ignite a near riot by simply coming forward from the rhythm section to the front of the stage playing wild rhythms that became more and more complex as the audience cheered him on. Lazaro Pla, known as Manteca, was a master "bongosero" who first rose to fame in 1940s Cuba when he was a featured attraction with the great pianist and composer Ernesto Lecouna and the renowned Cuban Boys, a leading exponent of the Cuban musical wave who gained international recognition and subsequently...

BLACKCLASSICAL / MONOHUB - 70 YEARS OF BLUE NOTE

Image
70 cuts in 70 minutes for the 70th anniversary of the mighty Blue Note label. That was the original premise behind the latest mix from Blackclassical and Monohub and to quote the guys themselves : "When we set out to do this comp, we wanted to do 70 tracks over 70 mins which looking back was a tad ambitious to say the least and am afraid we failed miserably on both budgets. 35 Tracks listed, 42 Used and some other little incidental bits… Plus it wouldn’t be a BC mix without a lil’bit of spoken word." What IS so great about this mix is they've managed to avoid all the usual old hackneyed numbers that get rolled out for every fucking Blue Note mix under the sun plus they haven't succumbed to the segued beats formulae and blending of similar styles approach. So get your sorry ass over to Blackclassical and download this motherfucker of a mix!

MALO - DOS

Image
Malo for Warners from 1972. Hadley Caliman (Saxes), Jorge Santana (Guitar), John L. Watson (Vocals), Francisco Aguabella (Percussion Vocals), Bill Atwood (Trumpet), Jorge Bermudez (Conductor), Forrest Buchtel (Trumpet), Arcello Garcia (Percussion), Arcello Garcia (Vocals), Mike Heathman (Trombone), Richard Kermode (Keyboards), Tom Poole (Trumpet), Rick Quintanal (Drums), Raul Rekow (Percussion), Alex Rodriguez (Trumpet), Leo Rosales (Percussion), Jose Santana (Violin), Richard Spremich (Drums), Pablo Tellez (Bass), Pablo Tellez (Percussion) Super heavy all killer no filler latin session which blows the shit out the amg review here: Malo's second album was cut with a lineup that had been reorganized following their debut. It's a little slicker than their first LP and the material isn't as strong. It's nonetheless a strong and invigorating rock/Latin jazz fusion, boasting some really hot playing, both in the ensemble work and improvisation. The six cuts, save one, all run...

TITO PUENTE - PUENTE IN PERCUSSION

Image
I ripped this last week in WAV format as a favour for someone who had a big influence on my record buying many years ago.I'd forgotten just how good it is so I figured I ought to stick it up here again. Reposted from July 06 Tito is joined by Willie Bobo,Patato Valdez and Mongo Santamaria on this super heavyweight percussion rinse out from 1956 and it really rocks.Check out the pneumatic drill on the cover to get an idea of what a banging set of percussion workouts this is. Killer Driller Ear Hole Filler-Hardcore stuff beginning to end.

CLAUDIO MEDEIROS , VICTOR M & FRIENDS - ROTATION

Image
Claudio Madeiros for Nucleus USA from 1975. Killer Brazilian funky fusion set on an obscure little label out of San Francisco. Big tune on this is "Soar" but rest is just as good with that lovely bubbling clavinet sound on most of the tunes. If you like early 70s Azymuth,Donato,Valle and the like you'll love this. Dusty Groove review(where it's now unavailable): A fantastic batch of jazzy grooves featuring Claudio Medeiros and Victor M of the group Made In Brasil, plus other associates from the Bay Area fusion scene of the 70s! The record's got a strong mix of mellow tunes and funkier ones with touches of Brazilian jazz and CTI fusion swirled together in a San Francisco sunny mode. The set includes the incredible groover "Soar", which has nice moog bubbling through a jazzy midtempo groove and features many other great tunes like "Cachaca", "Generous", "Green Olives", "Grape Woman", and "Rotation"

DON SEBESKY - GIANT BOX

Image
Reposted from OIR september 07. I was lucky enough to pick this up on a Japanese cd reissue yesterday so here's a sonically improved rip of this CTI bomb which sounds better than my original vinyl rip. Don Sebesky for CTI from 1973.I avoided this like the plague for 30 years imagining it to be all that was bloated and bland from CTI which sure churned out some shite in it's time. Then I saw it posted last year at Le Blog de Pekis ripped @128 from the jap cd.And I downloaded it to see if my preconceptions were right. They were not.It was fantastic!Absolutely fucking fantastic!! From the Axelrod sounding "Psalm 150" and "Semi-Tough" ,the gorgeous "Song to a Seagull" to the banging fusion of "Firebird/Birds of Fire"(Mahavishnu Orchestra meets Stravinsky head on)this really is....All Killer,No Filler. AMG on the case: This may have been Creed Taylor's most ambitious single project. As the cash was flowing in the wake of Deodato's massiv...

EMILIANO SALVADOR - 2

Image
Emiliano Salvador for Areito Cuba from 1980. Emiliano Salvador-Keyboards,Melodica,Arrangements;Trumpets-Arturo Sandoval,Manuel Mirabal,Andresito Castro,Andres Castro;Trombones-Enrique Perez,Geovani Mancebo;Bass-Eduardo Ramos;Percussion-Robero Garcia, Jose Quintana (Chango);Drums,Percussion-Frank Bejerano. Cuban jazz kicks ass! Check out the bangers "Luna Wanestein","Poly" and one of my all time raves "Son En 7/4"! Groove to the swinging "Cancion Isela" and "Con Sabor.." Fall asleep to the bolero "Tengo". Well 5 out of 6 ain't bad! All Killer No Filler.....almost!

KENNY BURRELL - UP THE STREET 'ROUND THE CORNER DOWN THE BLOCK

Image
Kenny Burrell for Fantasy from 1974. Kenny Burrell-Guitar;Jerome Richardson-Flute,Saxes;Richard Wyands-Electric Piano;Andy Simpkins-Bass;Lenny McBrowne-Drums;Mayuto Correa-Percussion Great mid 70s session from Kenny Burrell with that typical Fantasy fusion sound featuring the old club fave "Up The Street etc" by Onaje Alan Gumbs,a couple of Burrell originals, "Afro Blue" and a closing 9 minute workout of Richard Evans' "Soulero". Nice!

FRANK WESS - SOUTHERN COMFORT

Image
Frank Wess for Prestige from 1962. Al Aarons (tp) Frank Wess (ts, fl) George Barrow (bars) Tommy Flanagan (p) George Duvivier (b) Osie Johnson (d) Ray Barretto (cga) Oliver Nelson (arr) This one's for Reza and all the Oliver Nelson fans out there. Killer set with a nice latin twist from Frank Wess with arrangements by Oliver Nelson. "Blues For Butterball" was the hip swinger back in the day and the rest of the album's a treat for the ears. Here's a review from AMG: Recorded in 1962, Southern Comfort finds Frank Wess leading an octet that is arranged by Oliver Nelson. Although Nelson was a pleasing saxophonist -- he plays tenor on this vinyl LP -- it was his talents as an arranger that brought him the most attention. And Nelson's attractive arrangements serve Wess quite well throughout this session, which employs Wess on tenor sax and flute, Nelson on tenor sax, George Barrow on baritone sax, Al Aarons on trumpet, Tommy Flanagan on piano, George Duvivier on bas...

MASABUMI KIKUCHI - BUT NOT FOR ME

Image
Masabumi Kikuchi for Flying Disk Japan from 1978. Masabumi Kikuchi-Piano;Gary Peacock-Bass;AlFoster-Drums;Badal Roy-Tabla;Alyrio Lima-Percussion;Azzedin Weston-Percussion. Another Blogland exclusive for this one from Japan. A wonderful piece of piano trio dynamics augmented by percussion (check the enclosed rear sleeve credits). When I bought this I wasn't really taken by it at all....but the more I listened the more the album grew on me and now I'm just blown away by it. Check out Gary Peacock's "Pumu #1" featuring Badal Roy in full effect embellishing a static motif allowing Kikuchi to go into full flow. "Circle Dance" is as it sounds and perhaps the acoustic cousin of the fantastic "Circle Line" from Kikuchi's 1981 release "Susto". The whole lp is great so just download and open your mind....fabulous music...highly recommended. All Killer No Filler!

CINEMATIC TRAVELS - ANCIENT FUTURE

Image
Cinematic Travels (Ron Trent) for Village Japan from 2007. and now for something completely different.... Congas - Angel Figueroa/Keyboards - Ron Trent/Percussion - Angel Figueroa, Ron Trent Piano [Rhodes] - Ron Trent,Programmed By - Ron Trent,Violin - Dorian Chea One for the come down ..... Here's Ron's view : Cinematic Travels with the first album released entitled Ancient Future which is an experimental Jazz/World music influenced project I worked on for about a year. It’s combination of live and electronic elements fused together. I got a chance to work with a few great musicans such as Karsh Kale from Tabla Beat Science, Angel Figaroea, a master percussionist who’s played with Herbie Hancock but also Sting, Celia Cruz, Mongo Santamaria, and Vinx just to name a few, another featured percussionist Ken Robertson and my friend Gary Durdan from the famous TV show CSI. The album is a fusion of traditional folkloric ryhthms and visual orchestration. OIR luvs Detroit All Killer No...

JACK COSTANZO - COSTANZO , CANO & BONGOS !

Image
Jack Costanzo for GNP from 1956. Jack Costanzo: Bongos and Leader/ John Anderson, Paul López, Tony Terran: Trumpets Willy Gallardo: Timbales/ Manuel Ochoa (Kaskara): Vocals and Maracas /Eddie Gómez: Claves/ Ramón Rivera: Conga/Eddie Cano: Piano/Ernesto Montez: Bass/Marda Saxon: Vocal Hard as nails latin banger - All Killer No Filler - highly recommended! "Abaniquito" was the dance floor destroyer back in the day - you needed an oxygen mask after cutting the rug to that one! Here's a review by John Child: Dubbed "Mr. Bongo" by the eminent jazz critic Leonard Feather, Jack Costanzo is credited with introducing the bongos into American popular music when he joined Stan Kenton's band in 1947. He deliberately emulated the trumpet conjunto format of Cuba's La Sonora Matancera to achieve the album's fat sound and tips his hat to the group by covering their hit "Melao de Caña". Personnel include the incredible pianist Eddie Cano and trumpeter Paul ...

POTTER & TILLMAN - SPACE RAPTURE

Image
Potter & Tillman for Poet Records from 1981. Rare private press album on a jazz funk tip from Potter and Tillman which has also been referred to/known as "Steinway & Sons" Not my usual bag but there's a few bombs on here in the shape of "New Anniversary Waltz" and "Sing A Simple Song Of Praise" plus the two intro cuts. One for the soul boys in 81...and probably now for many of the followers of OIR(or possibly not given only 3 comments against 200+ d/loads in first 2 days)

LES MCCANN LTD - MCCANNA

Image
Les McCann for Pacific Jazz from 1964. Best album Les ever did imo which features the mighty latin dancefloor bomb "McCanna". Les plays with his LTD trio, plus the added percussion of Willie Correa, who plays bongos, conga, and timbales on the album for a strong latin feel that's missing from Les' other recordings.5 cracking originals, couple of standards(just love the rolling "St James Infirmary")and a stomping Mancini-Mercer tune. Can't believe this has never got a reissue. All Killer No Filler.

KATHRYN MOSES - MUSIC IN MY HEART

Image
Kathryn Moses for PM Records from 1979. Kathryn Moses Vocals,Flutes & Saxophones ;Doug Riley Pianos ;Robert Piltch Guitars Erica Goodman Harp ;David Piltch Basses ;Terry Clarke Drums ;Buff Allen Drums Don Alias Percussion And another one for the flute freaks this time from the vaults of PM Records who were responsible for some of the most hard ass fusion committed to vinyl-think Steve Grossman , Stone Alliance ,Elvin Jones.Well, here's something a little different from them. "Music In My Heart" was the big tune back in the day for the likes of Paul Murphy and Chris Bangs along with the funky "Lucky Duck". Dusty Groove had it on a blink and miss it cd reissue from Celeste(now oop) so here's their review. My post is ripped from the original long gone vinyl: The second album from Kathryn Moses a sweet mix of warm vocals, funky flute, and even a bit of sax! Kathyrn's as great a singer as she is an instrumentalist and the album offers equal parts of her tal...

Image
Eddie Marshall for Timeless from 1977. Emanuel 'Manny' Boyd (ss, ts), Bobby Hutcherson (vib), George Cables (p), James Leary (b), Eddie Marshall (d, per) Check the line up - yep it's Hutcherson's band from the mid 70s but with the drummer as leader. Four compositions from Marshall, one from Hutch and an old warhorse in "Salt Peanuts". Quality assurance guaranteed no need to sit and pontificate about this one! Here's an excerpt from an interview which Eddie did with Eric Muhler : Eric: How many CD's have you recorded in your own name? Eddie: Just one. One CD and one album. Eric: Record album? That vinyl stuff that nobody knows about anymore? (Laughter) Eddie: Yeah. I don't know if I even have it here. In my own name that's what I've done. Eric: Really? How come not more? Eddie: Because…you make records to sell them! (Laughter) Eric: Not necessarily! (More laughter) Not here in the Bay Area! Eddie: The first one I made I was working with Bobby...

DEWEY REDMAN - MUSICS

Image
Dewey Redman for Galaxy from 1979. Dewey Redman-Tenor,Musette,Harp,Vocal;Fred Simmons-Piano,Cowbell;Mark Helias-Bass;Eddie Moore-Drums,Percussion,Saw,Vocal. Paul Murphy flogged this to Chris Bangs who would drop the cut "Unknown Tongue" from the lp in his DJ sets back in the early 80s which is where I first heard it.What a tune!!! Kicking off with the high pitched Middle Eastern whine of Dewey on musette which is joined after a few minutes with the bowed bass of Mark Helias....then comes the marching snare and percussion of Eddie Moore and the bow is dumped for a bass line worthy of Cecil McBee while the musette keens on....until the whine drops down and out while the bass/percussion remain then Dewey begins speaking in tongues...shouting and gabbling away like a man possessed but that rhythm keeps it all storming ahead...then back in with the musette to a fade...Bomb! Can you imagine the impact this had on a crowd of southern soul boys all waiting to hit the floor to Lonnie ...

DON BURROWS - 2000 WEEKS

Image
Don Burrows for Columbia Australia from 1969. Haven't posted a soundtrack for aeons so here's a piece of vinyl all the way from Simon's homeland via the miracle(or should that be curse?)of ebay. Now very rare and highly collectible, it is in its own right a very fine set of late Sixties Australian modern jazz, performed by the cream of Sydney's jazz and studio session scene of that time including Burrows, George Golla, Graham Lyall, Ed Gaston and John Sangster Here's what James Pianta from Votary Records (who put it in his top 10 Aussie albums) had to say about it at aussiefunk blogspot : 2000 Weeks OST – Don Burrows (1968) OK, I must admit that a lot of Burrows solo work in the 70’s is not really my thing. I guess that’s the problem with being so prolific, some work is bound to suffer. But this late 60’s soundtrack to the Tim Burstall film on the other hand is simply brilliant. I have never seen the film, as I don’t think it ever saw a VHS release. It’s a dark and ...

THE LES DEMERLE TRANSFUSION -LIVE AT HOWARD RUMSEY'S CONCERTS BY THE SEA

ART FARMER - A SLEEPING BEE

Image
Art Farmer for Sonet from 1976. Art Farmer, trumpet, flugelhorn / Jan Schaffer, guitar / Gran Strandberg, piano /Red Mitchell, bass / Sabu Martinez, percussion / Tony Inzalaco, drums /Island Ostlund, drums The lyrical Art teams up with the mighty Sabu for this Swedish session featuring a cracker in "Green Witch" plus a reading of the Heath Bros "Smiling Billy" - nice! This Sonet LP finds Art Farmer with an atypical supporting group that includes fellow veteran Red Mitchell on bass, Latin percussionist Sabú Martínez, and several Europeans, among them guitarist Jan Schaffer and pianist Goran Strandberg. The opener, an easygoing take of "It Might As Well Be Spring," finds Farmer finally opening up in the closing chorus. Farmer's rich-toned flugelhorn interacts beautifully with Mitchell's imaginative bassline in the swinging take of "Come Rain or Come Shine," while the brisk bossa nova "Green Witch" is one of the more challenging ch...

"One of the most gorgeous records I've ever heard, mostly because it was one of pianist Jorge Dalto's final recording sessions. His playing here is compelling, spiritual and exhausting. Airto's surprising and beautiful baritone Spanish vocal on 'La Puerta,' with only piano accompanime...

Here's the write up at Kosmigroove from Eric Golub who joined the band after this lp: Co-founded by trumpeter/composer Randy Masters and keyboardist/composer Denny Berthiaume. Ronald Snijders for Black Straight Music from 1981. Moving over to Holland for private press business and a tough lp for the funky flute freaks! Check out "Latinetta","Wildgrass" and "Tori" for foot shufflin' action. He was born in Paramaribo, Suriname in 1951 and started to play the flute at the age of seven, influenced by his professionally fluteplaying father. In his youth he also practised guitar, sax, some piano and percussion, playing popular music, classical music, Brazilian music plus jazz. MAX GREGER JR,MILAN PILAR & CHARLY ANTOLINI - CATCH UP VOL. 1

Image
Max Greger,Milan Pilar and Charly Antolini for Calig from 1975. Greger-Keyboards,Pilar-Bass,Antolini-Drums. Now oop -here's the dusty groove review: A classic bit of 70s funk from Germany .This rare 1975 set was the brainchild of 3 of Germany's funkiest jazz players -- drummer Charly Antolini, whose drums crackled on some of the best MPS recordings; keyboardist Max Greger Jr, who made some great straighter albums in the 60s; and bassist Milan Pilar, an electric player with a really warm and round tone. Together, the trio grooves through some excellent funky numbers really jamming with a soulful groove, as Greger switches effortlessly between piano, moog, Fender Rhodes, mellotron, and organ! Includes the funky break classic "Onkel Joe" plus gems like "Moonlight On a Bald Head", "Catch Up", "Blues For The Kaiser", "Lydia", and "Spinning Wheel". Their first album 'Catch Up' was recorded in 1975 in the legendary Mu...

ROBIN JONES SEVEN - EL MAJA

Image
Robin Jones for Apollo Sound from 1972. Robin Jones-Drums,Percussion;Tony Uter:Congas;Simon Morton-Bongos;Olaf Vas-Sax,Flute;Roy Edwards-Trumpet;John Porter-Keyboards;Percy Borthwick-Bass. Another latin library banger from the wonderful Robin Jones. The big cuts spinnin' out the jazz dancers back in the day were "Atlas" and "El Maja" and you can hear that the Jones seven had assimilated much of the boogaloo and funk influences from Mighty Mongo's band of the time. As you can probably guess this one's yet another All Killer No Filler

LUIS GASCA - THE LITTLE GIANT

Image
Luis Gasca for Atlantic from 1969. Luis Gasca (Trumpet),Joe Henderson (Tenor),Herbie Hancock (Piano), Hubert Laws (Flute), Chuck Rainey (Bass), Marty Sheller (Cowbell), Steve Barrios (Timbales),Bernard "Pretty" Purdie (Drums), Mongo Santamaria (Conga). Luis Gasca's first solo outing featuring a burning version of "Motherless Child" and a super heavy "Afro Blue" - here's Dusty Groove on the case again: A rare album by the great west coast Latin trumpeter Luis Gasca, and argubly the best album he ever recorded! The set was recorded in New York during the late 60's, and features a great lineup of musicians that includes Paul Griffin on piano, Joe Henderson on tenor, Herbie Hancock on piano, Mongo santamaria on conga, and Bernard Purdie on drums. The style's a mix of soul jazz, Latin, and bits of modal riffing and the record features some beautiful large arrangements by Gasca and Mark Levine, in a style that's a bit like some of Duke Pearso...

SHIRLEY SCOTT - LATIN SHADOWS

Image
Shirley Scott for Impulse from 1965. Reposted from OIR August 2006. A lovely piece of organ led loungecore jazz arranged and conducted by Gary McFarland with Bob Thiele on prodction duties from 1965 on Impulse. Our girl Shirl (she was married to Stanley Turrentine from 61-71)is on B3 supported by McFarland,Bob Cranshaw,Willie Rodrigues,Mel Lewis and Jim Raney who are also joined by a string section on some cuts. This album features the insanely catchy "Hanky Panky"and a great version of "Soul Sauce". This is what dusty groove had to say about it: A great album from Shirley Scott - with some excellent arrangements by Gary McFarland! We've always felt that Shirley plays best when she's not leading the group -- when someone else is handling the arrangements, so that she can groove mightily on her own -- and this album is a perfect illustration of that fact! The album has a sparkling bossa and 60s groove finish -- similar to McFarland's albums for Verve at the...

ROBIN JONES - DENGA

Image
Robin Jones for Apollo Sound from 1971. A swift OIR repost from 2 1/2 years ago for the cheeky south london bastard! Old school latin jazz from Robin Jones-this lp was dug up from obscurity by Paul Murphy in the early 80s and hammered at the Electric Ballroom, The Wag and Jazzrooms around the country. He picked up a supply of copies and sold them from his shop in Soho which is where I got mine. Essentially a library lp this was released by Apollo Sound and recorded straight to two track with no overdubbing at CTS Studios in London. The quintet was made up of Robin Jones-Drums and Percussion;Tony Uter-Congas;Simon Morton-Bongos;Percy Borthwick-Bass;Olaf Vas-Bass;Ian Henry-Piano.The music falls in to two broad rhythmic genres-Afro-Cuban and Brazilian and was an attempt to capture the more "tipico" feel of latin music.Jones had played bongos for Edmundo Ross in the 60s and Borthwick had been a session musician working with Chocolate Armenteros andCharlie Palmieri.Heres a bit more ...

Private pressing business with a session spanning hard bop to funk for Johnny Walker who was hot to trot straight out of Lionel Hampton's big band. "Arrival" and "Dipping" were the tunes bangin' out the jazz rooms at the time. Here's what Lionel had to say about his young protege: "Johnny Walker -Trumpeter,Flugelhornist,Composer,Arranger and Band Leader is destined to become one of the major voices of the 80s.When Johnny came to my band in 1980 he brought with him a a positive professional attitude and an eagerness to learn and develop musically. His trumpet playing showed maturity and strength whether out front soloing or as part of th...
