I've been busy working with Tony "Impressed" Higgins putting together a new Japanese Jazz compilation which is being issued by BBE Records in a few months time - J Jazz: deep modern jazz from Japan 1969 - 1983. A collection of some of the finest, rarest and most sought-after modern jazz that saw artists developing new sounds and styles that redefined Japanese jazz. Mitsuaki Katayama for Johnny's Disc Japan from 1979. Mitsuaki Katayama - Drums ; Kishio Kitahara - Bass ; Kichiro Sugino - Piano. Time to wrap up 2014 with this top notch session from the wonderful Johnny's Disc of Japan. Five tunes topped and tailed by the fiery samba "Unknown Point" and the muscular percussion driven "First Flight" both penned by Katayama .Sandwiched between a lovely filling of three originals by Sugino & Kitaharo. The finest in Japanese Jazz.... Happy New Year!!!

Joe Haider Trio for Kick Records Germany from 1973. Joe Haider - Piano/ Fender Rhodes ; Isla Eckinger - Bass ; Allen Blairman - Drums Over to Europe for this super rare private press -apparently only 300 were issued - produced by Otto B.Hartmann at Horst Jankowski Studio in Stuttgart. Six original tunes opening up with the stonking "Tante Nelly " this one is total class from start to finish.

Mitsuaki Kanno (p), Osamu Oyama (ss, ts), Hiroyuki Yamakawa (ts), Tomoya Haneo (tp), Yasutoshi Inamori (fl), Yasushi Mitsui (g), Shizuo Hashimoto (b), Masabori Asakura (b), Junichi Mitobe (ds, perc) Superb blend of free and modal jazz with Japanese elements from pianist Kanno and his group featuring four long original compositions the highlight being the rolling modal  "Kumo No Ito" (Spider Silk). The finest in Japanese jazz....

Private press rarity scheduled for a limited 250 vinyl reissue from  seriE:WOC  on July 7th.Very highly recommended.Don't sleep on this one... Coalition’s single self-produced album, recorded for the private Kenya Records in 1978, presents as many questions as it does offer musical surprises. Not much is known about this groups who were a part of the late 70s Philadelphia jazz-soul scene. The music captured for the LP spans a broad range of styles, ranging from an intense fusion work-out (the album opener, ‘Marionette’), a mellow Terry Callier-esque style ballad (‘Thinking of You’), abstract tonal impressionism (‘Song to my Lady’), Afrocentric Strata East spiritual style jazz (‘Kenya’s Horizon’) and tough blowing hard-bop (‘The Downer’). In some senses, there’s something for everyone, and the bands instrumentation of tenor and flute riding over the solid rhythm section puts the listener in safe hands to enjoy a journey to the unexpected. Yoshio Ohtomo Quartet for Frasco Japan from 1976. Yoshio Ohtomo-Alto; Junichiro Ohguchi-Piano; Satoshi Kogusi-Bass; Fumio Watanabe-Drums Another Japanese obscurity this time a top post bop acoustic set from Ohtomo and friends for the very fine Frasco label.

Johnny Scott Quintet for Fontana UK from 1970. Johnny Scott - Flute ; David Snell - Harp ;  Duncan Lamont - Sax ; Barry Morgan - Drums ; Arthur Watts - Bass More superb Brit jazz from the magnificent Johnny Scott Quintet.The title is derived from a set of compositions (which make up side 1) written by Scott for a concert at The Purcell Room in London.Side 2 is made up by 4 more originals a couple from Lamont and one each for Snell and Scott. This is music of the highest order which seems to have been lost to obscurity with little or no mention of it anywhere from print to web. Very highly recommended & big thanks to Quimsy for putting me on to it.

Stan Butcher (ldr), George Hunter (as), Duncan Lamont (ts), Leon Calvert (t), Dick Abel (g), Arthur Watts (b), Barry Morgan (d), Barbara Moore (v), Stan Butcher (con) Stan Butcher leads and conducts a tip top band of Brit jazz stalwarts accompanied by the scat vocals of Barbara Moore on this legendary swingin' sixties session . No standards no covers just 12 fine original compositions 2 tunes from Barbara and the rest from Stan. Easy...Library....Jazz...this one's got the lot. "Oh by the way 'B' is for BUTCHER with just the slightest hint of bird and a touch of brass"

Olivier Peters for Village Music Germany from 1980. Olivier Peters - Saxes,Flute ; Joan E. Johnson - Vocal ; Walter Norris - Piano ; Gerd Mayer-Mandez - Bass ; Vinnie Johnson - Drums  Independently pressed German obscurity from 1980 but don't let the year put you off.This one's an absolute cracker stuffed full of bossas and sambas mixed in with some fierce modal business. Highly Recommended.

Heads up people - this rare piece of tip top Danish jazz is scheduled for a limited 250 vinyl reissue from seriE:WOC on January 25th.Very highly recommended. Here's some background : Danish jazz band founded in 1969. Band line up: Henrik Hove on bass, Ole Mathiessen on piano, Jesper Nehammer (later Thors Hammer, Alrune Rod and Entrance) on tenorsax, and Jon Finsen on drums. Played for a while every Monday in the famous Jazzhouse Montmatre in Copenhagen. Tordenskjolds Soldater only made this record (1970). The small record label Spectator Records was founded in 1969 by Jørgen Bornefeldt a former journalist from Danmarks Radio in coorporation with the jazz musician Carsten Meinert. Meinert recorded two albums on the label. He only joined the company in the beginning. Cindarellaistudiet The studio was destroyed august 6th 1972 by a major fire. And that was the end of Spectator Records. From 1969 to the end, the label recorded at least 23 lp albums and 9-11 singles/EP's. The pict...
